[Greifswald] Peatlands play a crucial role as CO₂ sinks and make a significant contribution to climate protection. Despite their importance, however, they are severely threatened by agricultural use and drainage. In the VALPEATS project, Fraunhofer is working with research partners to develop innovative digital solutions to record, analyse and evaluate the long-term condition of moors. By using artificial intelligence, remote sensing and sensor technology, the project is creating a data-driven decision-making basis for sustainable moor use and rewetting strategies.
