In September and October 2020, Fraunhofer IGD carried out an online survey on behalf of the DIN Consumer Council to determine consumer views on voluntarily usable biometric recognition systems. The unlocking of mobile devices turned out to be the »killer application« that helps biometrics (especially fingerprint and facial recognition) to get accepted in everyday consumer life. From the survey results, we derived recommendations for consumer protection in the voluntary use of biometric recognition systems. Furthermore, we identified shortcomings in the standardization of biometric technologies regarding the expectations of consumer protection and derived recommendations for action to overcome them.
