Biying Fu

Biying Fu studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2014, majoring in signal and data processing, and graduated as a Master of Science. Since September 2014 she has been working as a research scientist in the Smart Living & Biometric Technologies department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD). Here, she works in the Embedded Sensing and Perception research group, where she mainly focuses on the development of algorithms for indoor localization and activity recognition using various sensor technologies. Further research interests mainly include data and signal processing, quality assurance especially for facial images, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Ms. Fu did her PhD in November 2020 on the topic of "Sensor Applications for Human Activity Recognition in Smart Environment".

Currently, she is working as an associate professor at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in the faculty Design, Computer Science, Media with the major Smart Environment. On the Fraunhofer side, she participates in the mission 'Next Generation Biometric Systems' of ATHENE, in the project "Biometric Sample Quality Assessment".

ATHENE - Mission “Next Generation Biometric System” – Project “Biometric Sample Quality Assessment”
As part of the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity, we develop biometric solutions in the context of identity management. This includes the detection and prevention of attacks on biometric systems (e.g., Presentation Attacks and Morphing Attacks), the reduction of discriminatory behavior of such systems, and the quality assessment of biometric samples. The goal of this project is to make biometric systems safer, fairer, and more reliable for society.
