POCUS4Covid19 is a pioneering software solution that helps physicians to monitor the progress of Covid-19 disease among their patients. Thoracic ultrasound scans have emerged as an effective method, alongside CT scans and X-rays, of diagnosing viral lung infections, including those caused by SARS-CoV-2. Ultrasound scans are free from radiation and can be repeated as many times as required. They can be performed at the patient’s bedside, and the equipment is easy to disinfect. Recognizable changes in image data allow physicians to assess the progress of disease. However, the patterns captured during thoracic scans can be difficult to evaluate.
The POCUS4Covid19 software solution identifies defined indicators automatically by means of quantitative, computer-assisted image analytics. This allows interpretation on the basis of objective parameters, and swift, simple assessment—even by staff not specially trained in the use of lung ultrasound. The software therefore offers tangible benefits in the treatment of patients with acute symptoms. It allows quicker diagnosis of Covid-19 and supports ongoing monitoring of the patient’s condition. For example, one indicator of infection with Covid-19 is B-lines that reflect fluid accumulation in the pulmonary interstitium caused by viral pneumonia. The development team is working on the automatic recognition and quantification of these B-lines in image data. DEGUM, the German Society for the Use of Ultrasound in Medicine, is currently defining further Covid-19 indicators as the basis for future updates of the POCUS4Covid19 software.
