In 2017, Fraunhofer IGD celebrates two anniversaries: In Darmstadt, it looks back on 30 years of research. The Rostock site has operated for 25 years. The Fraunhofer researchers celebrate their anniversary and present their research work under the motto "Into the Fourth Decade with Four Key Topics".
(Darmstadt/Rostock/Graz) Thirty years ago, computer graphics was still a niche subject. Today, Fraunhofer IGD is the world's leading research institution for applied visual computing. Visual computing means image and model-based IT. It combines computer graphics and computer vision. In simple terms, it describes the capability of transforming information into images and extracting information from images.
All technology solutions of Fraunhofer IGD with is 200+ researchers are based on visual computing. "Our research work is guided by four key topics", explains Professor Dieter W. Fellner, Head of the Institute. "The application fields Digitized Work, Smart City, and Individual Health are based on our platform strategy Visual Computing as a Service."
In the field of Digitized Work, the research projects focus on support people in the Industry 4.0, in which modern Internet technologies meet conventional industrial production techniques.
The key topic Smart City is about the sustainable development of urban areas. This field includes the development of solutions for digital urban administration, optimum traffic planning, and interactive citizen involvement.
Individual Health is another subject area in which visual computing is expected to benefit physicians and patients alike. Various visualization solutions – even with very large data – strive to ensure the best therapy possible.
With its platform strategy Visual Computing as a Service, Fraunhofer IGD will provide its base technologies to developers in the industry in the years to come. The objective is to establish a cloud software platform for visual computing applications.
On September 6, 2017, the Rostock site of Fraunhofer IGD will celebrate its 25th anniversary of research activity. The anniversary celebration of the Darmstadt site will take place on June 20, 2017. Representatives from the fields of politics, business, and research are expected for the celebration under the motto "Into the Fourth Decade with Four Key Topics".
